In honor of the 500th birthday of the St. Bavokerk, the Haarlem icon received a new lighting plan for both its interior and exterior. Under the supervision of Rob Kruizinga and Thijs Beerkens of Studio Kruizinga and ipvDelft, we contributed to the conceptual and technical detailing, implementation, and installation of the design.
The project involved creating technical drawings for over 350 fixtures, producing visuals to communicate the design vision to stakeholders, assisting during on-site lighting tests, and participating in meetings with the municipality, installer, and supplier.
The design’s beauty lies in its treatment of both the interior and exterior. The exterior lighting accentuates the rhythmic volumes of the Gothic structure, while the interior lighting creates transparency by illuminating the wooden ceilings, visible from the street. This gives the structure a friendly undertone and highlights the world-famous Müller organ from 1738. One of our designers, who grew up near Haarlem, feels immense pride seeing the building come to life at night, knowing we played a role in making it possible.
