The crane in Scheldekwartier, Vlissingen, stands as a poignant symbol of the city's maritime legacy and industrial prowess. Originally integral to shipbuilding, it holds significant historical value and has been preserved amidst ongoing urban revitalization efforts. These initiatives aim to blend historical preservation with modern development, creating a vibrant mixed-use area that attracts residents and visitors alike.

Designing the lighting for the crane in Vlissingen involved a crucial, highly detailed 3D model. Constructed meticulously using historical documents sourced online, this model formed the foundation of our entire design process. Ensuring optimal placement and beam angles for the fixtures was our primary focus, aiming to illuminate the crane effectively while minimizing the use of materials. This was especially important due to the installation team's limited access to certain areas.

After digital design simulations, we conducted on-site tests to refine the exact positioning of the fixtures and determine practical mounting solutions. Our strategy included using broad beams at lower levels and carefully positioning fixtures along the crane's gantry to cast subtle light accents on its intricate framework without causing excessive light pollution. This approach not only highlights the crane's architectural details but also integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment, creating a visually striking and environmentally conscious lighting design. The outcome is a blend of historical authenticity and modern lighting innovation, transforming the crane into a captivating nocturnal landmark in Vlissingen's skyline.
