The Julianakerk, situated amidst the bustling port of Rotterdam, stands as a monument of history and community. With its imposing tower and characteristic architecture, it has welcomed and connected countless generations over the years. As an integral part of Heijplaat's heritage, the church remains a beacon of identity and significance in modern times.

The story of the Julianakerk took an unexpected turn after a devastating fire, which compelled architect and developer Nima Morkoç to explore new paths from his original plans to reside there. Following an extensive approval process and intensive preparations, the church's renovation into a unique residential project is now underway. Preserving its historical value and community function, this project signifies a harmonious blend of past and future.

We devised a unique plan for the outdoor spaces, with special attention to the church's distinctive tower. This spire has been designed with an innovative steel cable structure that supports vegetation, allowing it to evolve with the seasons. Additionally, by placing subtle lighting on the facade of the house behind the old wall of the burned church, it creates an enchanting "sacred light". This way, the lighting design not only honors the history and unique location but also fosters a warm and meaningful atmosphere where future residents can write their own chapter in this everchanging story.
