We've had the pleasure of contributing to the transformation of the former Zuider Hospital into Zuider Gymnasium. This project, designed by Molenaar & Co Architects, won the Rotterdam Architecture Prize 2023. Our primary focus was on the STOA, the elongated hallway near the main entrance. The multi-functional nature of this space required an lighting plan that would accommodate it's varied uses.
In school corridors, standard lighting solutions are typically employed, but for this unique space, there was a desire for something more interesting. Despite a limited budget, we devised an zigzag configuration with tracks, playfully suspended at varying heights. This creative solution allowed us to achieve maximum impact with minimal resources.
To highlight the length and height of the space, we strategically placed uplights between the columns. Additionally, downlights were installed to ensure that the area received adequate illumination. This thoughtful approach not only enhanced the functionality of the space but also added to the overall appeal.
